Expressive performance gestures and the communication of emotions
This project examined the communication of emotions from performers to listeners. Sub-questions included:
- whether singers changed the manner of expression of emotions in the 20th century or whether the manner of expression of emotions was relatively constant, and
- how communication of emotions through music performance functions - do performers mainly communicate a level of arousal or are they able to communicate more subtle emotional distinctions?
